The proposed new supermarket and produce market are divided into two separate buildings elements within the site. The supermarket is located along Vaea Street, the main axis road in Apia, while the produce market is located on Togafuafua Road which runs along a minor axis parallel to Vaea Street. The two buildings are similar in function but very different in terms of usage.
The new supermarket consists of a series panels and colour that creates a street façade entrance onto the site. The cantilevered roof canopy acts as a sun shade as well as a rain protection for the customers. Upon arrival, the main entry into the supermarket is emphasized by one of the facades that are pushed out onto the footpath. Its signals an entry into the building marked by its bold alucobond material and colour. Large shop front windows are strategically placed to allow natural lighting in as well as providing a glimpse into the supermarket interior. The produce market was inspired by traditional Chinese and Pacific Architecture. The concrete columns and roof design reflected that of Chinese temples and the Samoan fale. The building consists of two levels linked by two staircases at the sides. The stairs are partially concealed with timber screens that were inspired by Chinese bamboos and weaving mats. The screens provide shading from the rain and sun as well as providing a wall feature for the building.
